About us

Comments

When a visitor leaves a comment on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help detect spam.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also known as a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to check whether you are using it. The Gravatar service’s privacy policy is available at: https://automattic.com/privacy/. Once your comment is approved, your profile picture will be publicly visible alongside your comment.

Media

If you are a registered user and upload images to the site, you should avoid uploading images with EXIF location tags. Visitors to the site can download and read the full location data from images on the site.

Cookies

If you comment on the site, you will have the option to save your name, email address and website in cookies, so that when you write further comments, this information will already be conveniently filled in. Cookies expire after one year.

If you visit the login page, we will create a temporary cookie to check whether your browser accepts cookies. It does not contain any personal data and will be deleted when you close your browser.

When you log in, we also set several cookies to store your login details and any screen options you have selected. Login cookies expire after two days, and screen options after one year. If you tick the ‘Remember me’ option, your login will expire after two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be deleted.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be stored in your browser. This cookie contains no personal data, simply referring to the ID of the article you have just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may contain embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if you had visited the specific website directly.

These websites may collect information about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share data with

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the message sent.

How long we keep your data

If you leave a comment, its content and metadata will be retained indefinitely. This allows us to recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically, without sending them for moderation each time.

For users who have registered on our website (if any), we also store the personal information entered in their profile. Any user may view, correct or delete their personal information at any time (except for their username, which cannot be changed). Site administrators may also view and modify this information.

What rights do you have regarding your data

If you have a user account or have posted comments on this site, you can request a file containing an export of all the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided. You can also request that we delete all of your personal data held by us. This does not apply to any data that we are obliged to retain for administrative, legal or security reasons.

Where we send your data

Guest comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
